Oil and Gas Pipelines

As the oil and gas industry continues to expand in the state of Ohio, natural gas pipelines play an increasingly important role. Natural gas pipelines are necessary for the transportation of natural gas and oil and gas products. It is challenging to understand the regulatory arena for pipelines; the resources below provide helpful information.

Ohio Power Siting Board

The Ohio Power Siting Board (OPSB) is a state agency that issues certificates of environmentl compatibility and public need for the construction, operation and maintenance of gas and natural gas tramission lines and associated facilties transporting gas in excess of 125 pounds per square inch.  The OPSB offers a "Natural Gas Pipeline FAQ" here.

Public Utilities Commission of Ohio

The Public Utilities Commission of Ohio (PUCO) is responsible for safe, reliable and environmentally sound operation of Ohio's natural gas pipeline system.  PUCO investigators inspect each natural gas pipeline system in the state at least once every two years and review records and procedures implemented by utilities.  For information on PUCO's role with gas pipelines, visit their website.

Federal Energy Regulatory Commission

The Federal Energy Regulatory Commission, or FERC, is an independent agency that regulates the interstate transmission of natural gas. FERC also reviews proposals to build liquefied natural gas terminals and interstate natural gas pipelines.

Information on what to expect when an interstate natural gas pipeline crosses your land is available on FERC's website at: http://www.ferc.gov/for-citizens/citizen-guides/citz-guide-gas.pdf.
